The purpose of this qualification is to enable the recognition of intermediate level skills and knowledge required by the floristry industry.

The qualification is for people with entry level experience who wish to progress their skills and knowledge in the floristry industry. Learners will benefit by having a qualification that recognises their skills and provides a training and career pathway in the floristry industry.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Prepare hand-tied, base medium, and wired floral items to meet customer specifications for a range of purposes and occasions
  • Display and maintain plant materials and arrangements in a retail outlet to maximise their impact
  • Provide front-of-shop customer service and refer complaints

Course Content

  • FLC01 Prepare and construct hand tied floral designs
  • FLC02 Construct and present wired floristry products
  • FLC03 Prepare base medium and construct
  • FLC04 Provide comprehensive quality customer service to floristry customers
  • US20696 Demonstrate knowledge of the elements and principles of floristry design

Career Opportunities

The industry will benefit having trainees who can work effectively and demonstrate intermediate level floristry skills. Graduates will be capable of working under broad guidance and will have some responsibility for their own performance.

Satisfactory Completion

To satisfactorily complete the New Zealand Certificate in Floristry (Level 3), and be awarded this qualification the student must successfully achieve:

  • A minimum of 55 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Floristry (Level 3)
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Floristry full-time over 18 weeks

Entry criteria

NCEA (Level 1) or equivalent

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 3 (General) or (Workplace) b) Level 3 (General)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than PASS in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE I with no less than distinction in any band
