What You Will Learn

Aging and Palliative Care

To introduce learners to the aging process and how it affects one’s lifestyle and well-being over time. It covers the support requirements for palliative care as well as caring for the aged. The course covers signs of abuse and appropriate responses to these.

Professional and Cultural Aspects

The course covers the cultural aspects of supporting Maori in a health or well-being environment, including Maori operating principles and values and the relationship between them. Professional and ethical behaviour is discussed, and learners are provided with an introduction to human anatomy and physiology.

Equipment and Safety Practices

The aim of this course is for students to learn the correct procedures to be followed in using equipment to move people and how to assist people using assistive equipment. Workplace health and safety practices are covered. The holistic needs of the people requiring support are discussed together with how these might be met.

Entry criteria

Open entry
A compulsory criminal record check
Recommended minimum of Step 4 Literacy and Step 5 Numeracy on the Adult Learning Progressions or equivalent
An interview and a short statement of intent on why the learner wishes to pursue a Healthcare qualification.

International English Requirements

IELTS academic score of 5.0 with no band less than 5.0 or equivalent
