The NZ Certificate in Baking (Generalist) [Level 4] programme is essentially hands-on training. You will be taken out of the classroom and into the real-world environment of a local commercial bakery kitchen and shop in Hawke’s Bay.

In our bakery training environment you will work as an effective member of the team and learn to communicate clearly with customers and your colleagues. You will develop a solid background of general bakery knowledge.

Study is based on bakery techniques research, and its culinary specialities. Formal work experience in industry is also an important part of the programme, building professional relationships and connections to employers.

Delivered over one year, this programme is designed to help you develop a solid background of general bakery knowledge.

Formal work experience in industry is also an important part of the programme, building professional relationships and connections to employers. EIT’s School of Tourism and Hospitality baking programme is essentially hands-on training. You will be taken out of the classroom and into the real-world environment of a local commercial bakery kitchen and shops. In our bakery training environment you will work as an effective member of the team and learn to communicate clearly with customers and your colleagues. Having consulted with industry when developing this programme an EIT baking graduate should be well positioned and equipped for finding work in this field.

Career Opportunities and Outcomes

With a worldwide shortage of skilled people in the industry, graduates may take their place in the workforce, progress to further industry-based training or progress onto the NZ Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) [Level 5] – Patisserie strand.

Entry criteria

ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants with the NCEA Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirements are automatically accepted onto the programme if numbers allow.

An up-to-date CV or a personal declaration will be required of those to demonstrate a student s potential to succeed. An interview will be carried out if the CV or personal declaration does not initially demonstrate the potential to succeed.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English Language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. English Language fluency can be verified by achievement of one of the following within the last two years:

• New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied)
• IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0
• PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
• International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA or successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply)
