Gain specialised knowledge and practical skills to be able to work in a salon under broad guidance.

Build on the skills learnt at level 3 with basic colour work, advance blow wave and advance hair up.

This programme also offers opportunities to work backstage at local and national events like the World of Wearable Arts so you can experience the breadth of work available to skilled stylists.

You will also continue to develop your practical skills in the on campus salons to gain an understanding of what it is like to work in a salon with clients.

On completion of the programme, you are ready to work as an apprentice hairdresser, where you can pathway to the Professional Stylist qualification.

Entry criteria

New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3) or equivalent knowledge and skills.

Special entry

In exceptional circumstances if you do not meet the full entry requirements you may be granted admission to the Programme on the approval of the Head of Department or delegate if he/she is confident of your ability to successfully undertake the programme with a reasonable likelihood of success.

English language requirements:

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS Academic Score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0 OR equivalent.

  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examinations - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
