Become an ambassador of Maori knowledge. Discover the contribution it can make to problem solving the challenges faced by and within global societies.

An understanding of Maori language, culture and Te Tiriti o Waitangi is key to shaping the social, political, and economic future of our nation.

With a Massey BA (Maori Knowledge) you’ll acquire knowledge of Maori society and culture, particularly the significance of te reo Maori, Maori worldviews.

You’ll be able to engage with a range of social, cultural, economic and political structures and processes – you’ll be an agent of positive Maori development. You’ll acquire important connections that will enable you to demonstrate your social responsibility toward Maori development, in ways that are respectful of communities, the environment, and wider society.

Your BA (Maori Knowledge) will give you the opportunity to apply your knowledge across a range of areas, for example:

A major in Maori Knowledge consists of 120 credits.

Entry criteria

Students must have successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. International students need to check the equivalency of their secondary school qualification by reviewing the Academic Admission Requirements by Country.

Students from a country where English is not the first language, must obtain a minimum English Language competency level.

  • IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
  • PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
  • Cambridge English score of 169 overall and all bands 162 or better
