Course Outline

The Foundation Certificate comprises the first four papers of the Massey Diploma in Agriculture. You will learn principles underpinning various aspects of agriculture.

Course Content

Students will develop knowledge, skills and aptitude to manage farms in a changing social, economic and technological environment. Graduates can be found on farms, in rural support industries and pursuing further education.

Qualification Pathways

The Foundation Certificate in Agriculture qualification is the first semester of the Massey Diploma in Agriculture or can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology - Rural Animal Technician or the New Zealand Certificate in Sustainable Primary Production

Entry criteria

17 years of age at time of course commencement. 12 weeks farm employment; or an agriculture-related, level 3 NZQF Certificate. And will have been selected into the programme on the basis of interview, if required by the Academic Board or their delegate. Restricted or class 1 licence

Students are admitted to the Qualification on the basis of NCEA Level 2, literacy and numeracy and on completion of a years fulltime farm employment

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 3 (Academic) b) Level 3 (Applied)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
