Summary

New Zealand has an ageing population meaning this is a growth industry which has an increasing need for workers to provide care and support services for the older person, the sick and those recovering from injury or operations.

Develop your knowledge and interpersonal skills to become part of the Health Care sector.

Health Assistance Strand

Work as a healthcare assistant to support and care for people in private homes, hospitals, general practices or rest homes in a range of contexts including acute care, primary care, aged residential care and other therapeutic programmes. There will be an element of online learning as well as a face-to-face component. The practical assessments will be undertaken on-site and in placement.

Job Opportunities

There is a high demand for health care assistants.

The health care, aged care and community and disability sector will need 16,000 extra workers by 2021, according to the Industry Training Federation.

The programme comprises six courses:

  • Course One: Protection of the Vulnerable
  • Course Two: Professional Expectations
  • Course Three: Risk Minimisation
  • Course Four: Person-Centred Care Practices
  • Course Five: Safe Practices
  • Course Six: Palliative Care Practices

Entry criteria

  • 10 NCEA Level 1 credits in literacy and 10 NCEA Level 1 credits in numeracy, or
  • An academic qualification at least equivalent to the above
  • 17 years old or over
  • Applicants with English as an additional language are required to provide proof of their English language competency.

Note: If you are 20 years of age or over and do not hold the minimum entry requirements you may be eligible to be enrolled where your previous educational, work or life experience indicates you have a reasonable likelihood of success. This will be determined through an interview prior to enrolment.

English Language (for international students)

  • A minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 5.0 with no band score lower than 5.0, or equivalent
