Summary

This programme contributes to graduates obtaining their Maritime New Zealand licence: Skipper Coastal Offshore.

This programme will give you the skills you need to take charge of, and maintain, the safety of vessels of less than 24 metres length, operating within coastal and offshore limits.

If you already hold a Skipper Restricted Limits Licence, and wish to progress to the role of skipper on coastal or offshore vessels – then this programme is for you.

You may also be eligible for this programme if you hold an MNZ Inshore Launch master license or a Local Launch Operator license.

This Maritime Operations - Skipper Coastal Offshore programme will give you the qualification you need to apply for the Maritime New Zealand licence: Skipper Coastal Offshore. It also includes all the short courses you require to gain your licence, such as the fire, survival, first aid and radio certificates.

Length

24 weeks total duration - includes online/distance learning components and a 15 week block course here in Nelson prior to your MNZ Final Examination.

Entry criteria

No minimum academic requirements.

English language requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score

  • General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examinations - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36

Other requirements

Applicants for each Programme must hold the MNZ Licence (or equivalent) as listed below:

  • Applicants for Maritime Operations- Skipper Coastal Offshore- must hold an SRL or equivalent
  • Applicants for Maritime Operations- Skipper Fishing Vessel Limited/ Master 500t Near Coastal - must hold either Mate FV Limited or Watchkeeper Deck 500t Near Coastal
  • Applicants should be aware that there are MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for the MNZ licence which their programme contributes towards.

Applicants must also: Be physically fit and capable of participating in the practical training component; Students must provide a Medical Certificate issued by a General; Practitioner, or provide a Seafarers Medical Certificate or equivalent.
