A description of life at Bayfield High School from Van Minh Tran (an international student)
"Coming and learning in New Zealand is an interesting experience for me. Education in New Zealand is different from Vietnam both in the learning environment and lifestyle. With small classroom numbers, we students get to have better care from the teachers towards the individual. On top of being friendly, the teachers are very helpful as well; they don’t mind offering their own time to give us 1-on-1 tutorials, which I found played a significance role in my learning success. The teaching methods and flexible schedule allows students to develop their interests and find their own strengths. New Zealanders are approachable. The learning style also allows us to find people with our same mindset and interests who will become my lifelong friends. We have shared memories in classes, out of classes, on school trips, and even overseas. We are still keeping in contact and continuing to create more memories with each other every day.
Dunedin, where I live is a slow-paced city which has a lot of beautiful scenery and it also grants access to many different parts of this beautiful country as well. As a student the host families brought me to see life in New Zealand through the scenery, in their families and I was lucky enough in their holidays to experience Christmas in the summer. All of these teachers, friends and families were a great part of my experience in New Zealand, they are my second family - New Zealand family."
