Summary

Welcome to Marlborough Girls' College | Te Kāreti Kōhine o Wairau

Young women at MGC are empowered to achieve personal and academic excellence through high quality learning. They do this with the support of highly committed and experienced teachers who believe that all young women can learn, achieve and contribute to our community.

We strive to create a caring, supportive and challenging environment based on our shared values of Mana Wahine: Responsibility, Achievement and Respect. Our restorative approach supports all members of our school community to reach their potential.

We have a clear vision for learning that is focused on the skills and competencies young women will need to succeed in their futures. Learning at MGC has purpose, is student centered and is pursued through authentic and relevant contexts. We believe in educating the whole person and learning includes a wide range of sporting, cultural, leadership and personal development opportunities.

The New Zealand Curriculum drives our teaching and learning, incorporates all learning areas, and allows our students to gain the full range of NCEA qualifications and pathways. Emphasis is placed on the qualities inherent in self-management, a strong work ethic and personal responsibility. Participation is expected, endeavor celebrated, diversity respected and teamwork encouraged. MGC graduates are critical thinkers and empowered, life-long learners living in and embracing diverse communities.

We are very proud of Marlborough Girls’ College and our young women. It is our belief that strong relationships between all members of our school community lie at the heart of their success. We look forward to developing that relationship with you.

International student quote:

"It is often said that the teenage period is one of the most important periods in one’s life for it is the transition period from childhood to adulthood. Being away from home and family during this confusing period of time and trying to make sense of myself and the world was rather a tough challenge. But with the guidance and encouragement from the Marlborough Girls’ College staff and community, my teenage years have always been one of my favorite memories in my life. My experience at Marlborough Girls’ College was challenging and tough, but the experience helped me grow into a confident and global individual.

As a non-native speaker, there were many times when I doubted my capability of aiming high and reaching my goals due to the language and cultural barriers. One simple homework that took Kiwi students a week to complete, took me three weeks. To receive excellence in NCEA assessments, I had to put extra efforts and be extremely determined. Even if it took me many drafts before handing in one polished writing, my teacher always patiently helped me see how I could improve my writing and reach my goal. When I felt lost, my host mother was next to me sharing her thoughts and experiences.

When I felt homesick, my friends from all over the world rushed into the classroom to give me warm hugs. They also pushed my boundaries with their different background and perspectives and helped me appreciate diversity. My time at Marlborough Girls’ College is a part of my identity that I am extremely proud of and my Marlborough Girls’ College experience still helps me overcome the challenges I face during my next journey in life.

I am very grateful for all the lessons and the beautiful memories I’ve gained at Marlborough Girls’ College and I strongly recommend Marlborough Girls’ College to the international students who are considering studying in New Zealand. Marlborough Girls’ College is not just an academic experience but it prepares you for a global world of opportunities, helps you realize some of the most important lessons in life, and gives you unforgettable memories."
