Summary
Nelson College is an innovative boys’ school founded in 1856. The college takes pride in being New Zealand’s oldest state school with a rich heritage of tradition forming a backdrop to modern educational practice.
The latest ERO report (2016) has acknowledged and reinforced the Nelson College Vision.
- The college has a long history and students and staff are proud of its traditions. Its vision is to equip students with the skills, knowledge, attitudes and values that they need to fulfil their potential as citizens in the 21st century. High priority is given to a sense of belonging among students.
- Students are encouraged and supported to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and progress.

Nelson College offers a full orientation programme, guidance and pastoral care. ESOL programmes or Specialised English Language Programmes are offered at all levels, taught by trained ESOL teachers. We offer many courses with a strong academic focus as well as arts, drama, music and cultural co-curricular activities.
International students have the choice of living in one of two boarding houses at the College or living with a New Zealand family in an International Homestay.

The region has a mild sunny climate and easy access to beautiful beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers and National Parks for recreation. Nelson’s lively city centre is within walking distance of the College and offers all the amenities you would expect in a modern city.
