"Hi, my name is Anthony Dao (Đào Thế Anh), a Vietnamese international student at Pakuranga College and I have been studying at this school for over a year.
One of the significant differences between studying in New Zealand in general and at Pakuranga College and studying in Vietnam is the learning style. It makes me feel like it is less stressful than studying in Vietnam. I don’t have to study all the subjects, but I can choose the subjects I prefer instead. Therefore, I have more time to rest and get involved in other exciting activities. At Pakuranga College, they teach me to be more productive, imaginative, I get to practice more than just learning the theory. Teachers always make the lesson more fun and enjoyable, so I don’t get bored.
When I first came to New Zealand, I was extremely nervous about everything: my English, my confidence, my background. However, after a few months, things got smoother and I was used to this entirely new life. At first, my English was so bad that I couldn't even answer a simple question like “How’s your day going”, and then I found making friends was the best way for me to improve my English. As my English improved everything else changed, I was able to communicate, contribute to lessons at school and my learning just got better and better.
The best thing about studying and living in New Zealand is that I’ve experienced the balance of the lifestyle. In Vietnam, the most essential part of my life is studying. In New Zealand, everything is equal. I work hard, study hard, but there is plenty of time to spend on myself or with my friends. I think this helps me a lot as a teenager - a part of life that I need to learn, participate, experience for the preparation of becoming an adult."
