Waitaki Girls’ High School warmly welcomes international students. As well as offering a wide range of subjects and co-curricular activities, we offer many special features to meet the needs of students from other countries.
Students are welcome to our school either for short-term or long-term study. We provide an excellent ESOL programme, a special system of pastoral care, and recreational activities which ensure that international students gain full benefit from their time in New Zealand.
Girls at Waitaki Girls' High School are very proud of their school. We are a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school and our values are based on developing learners who are: Respectful, Responsible and Resilient. We blend a strong sense of tradition with an increasing focus on the use of modern learning approaches. Our grounds and facilities are pleasant and well maintained, including a vibrant boarding hostel providing a "home away from home" for girls who need it.
Research backs up that girls learn better in a girls' school. Girls take on all leadership roles and support and mentor younger students. Our supportive pastoral system has the Whānau Group as the first link, followed by a strong House System. We have over fifty clubs including many varieties of sport (you name it; we play it), cultural activities and service groups. Our Kapa Haka and Pasifika groups are strong performers who stand tall in their mana and cultural pride. We have strong links with our community.
We offer a strong curriculum programme that promotes excellence and striving to reach one's potential. This is evidenced in our very good NCEA results. We are interested in the whole person – excellence of character as well as academic ability – we offer a curriculum that inspires resilience, resourcefulness, reflection and positive relationships.
We stand for hard work and integrity and our teachers are passionate, caring and hard working. A Waitaki Girls' learner is equipped to take her place in the world after school. We welcome your consideration of Waitaki Girls' High School as a learning community that will allow your daughter to thrive.
Waitaki Girls' High School is blessed with spacious open grounds with established trees and gardens which help give the school its undoubted charm and enhance the outstanding and well-resourced classroom facilities.
The school has outstanding building facilities including a hall, gymnasium, library, art and music suite, brand new computer suites and video conferencing room.
We expect that all long-term overseas students will live during their first year at Waitaki House, our boarding hostel. Waitaki House, which is situated in the school grounds, operates under the supervision of the Hostel Manager who is assisted by supervisory staff. Students live in single rooms. The hostel provides all meals, supervises study and ensures the safety and well-being of all its boarders. Girls living in a hostel have many opportunities to speak English, make friends with New Zealand students and adapt easily and quickly to a different lifestyle. The hostel has Wi-Fi and its own telephones. Some students may choose after one year in the hostel to move into homestay accommodation. Every care is taken to check the suitability of these homestay placements and we meet regularly with host parents and students to check out any problems which may arise.
"The hostel is great fun. All the girls are friendly to international students and we get along very well. I love the hostel."
