At Glenfield Intermediate School we have a comprehensive programme for learning English for those students for whom English is not their first language. The programme has been developed to cover three main stages in second language acquisition.
Students in the 'developing' stages learn English skills while working on curriculum content and focus on reading, writing and speaking. They are withdrawn from their usual class for two or three hours per week.
The students in the 'consolidating' stages are either supported in their own class or withdrawn once a week. The focus is on supporting their academic learning in both English and the other content areas.
The programme is taken by a senior teacher, who is assisted by language assistants all of who have relevant experience and training in this area of English teaching.
