Summary
This qualification is designed for you if you need a broad, generalist understanding of Information Systems (IS), equipping you with the soft skills and applied technical skills and knowledge to meet the needs of a range of entry-level IS roles. As a graduate you will be capable of operating within applicable professional standards and practice, both independently or as part of a team, under broad supervision. All courses can be cross-credited into the second year of the Bachelor of Computing Systems degree.

As a graduate of this qualification you will have the skills and knowledge to work in the IT industry in a range of entry level roles.
The scope of the qualification outcomes matches requirements for IT support roles at Tier 1.
This qualification can lead to positions in general business requiring broad knowledge of hardware, software and IS. However, the main purpose of the programme is to provide you with a platform for more advanced study in IT.
Your study pathway could progress onto the Bachelor of Computing Systems.

Entry criteria
Entry RequirementsA personal interview may be part of the application process. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
University Entrance; or
- NCEA Level 3, with credits in mathematics, technology, science or related subjects, or
- NZ Certificate in Information Technology Essentials [Level 4]; [Ref: 2594}, or
- NZ Certificate in Computing (Advanced User) [Level 4] {Ref 2593}, or
- An equivalent or more advanced qualification
A candidate who is 20 years of age or more and does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme on the basis of a portfolio of evidence of their ability to succeed in the programme, and subject to an interview.
Other RequirementsComputer literacy is highly recommended in order to be able to cope with the digital components of the courses. Guidance and further details are provided in the application and enrolment information.
- Successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply)
- Completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 5 with any endorsement)
- IELTS Academic score of 5.5, with no band score lower than 5.0, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment
- International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA

You may already have some knowledge or skills which could be recognised and credited against your intended study programme, including study while at secondary school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training and experience, other tertiary study, life experience or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you should apply for Cross Credit (CC) or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
CC is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for CC if you have passed a very similar course at the same level.
RPL is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you have gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations.
As part of your application, you will need to provide sufficient details and corroboratory evidence, to support your request for academic credit towards your intended programme of study.
