Summary

Develop cutting-edge skills.

Hairdressing is an exciting and dynamic industry with opportunities in New Zealand and abroad. Whether you want to work at a boutique salon, behind the scenes at fashion shows and movie sets, or launch your own successful salon, this is the place to start.

Gain real-world experience at our on-campus salon. Fully equipped with the latest technology and products, you’ll perfect a professional standard of skills without leaving campus.

Hands-on learning is our focus, and you will have access to our world-class facilities and highly experienced and attentive tutors. Work on clients with the support of your kaimahi (tutor) and build confidence in your hairdressing skills. You'll learn the essential skills to become a hairdresser including salon operations and systems, client consultations, hair fashion, hair and scalp treatments, styling, basic hair cutting and colouring, and open salon practise.

When you graduate, you will have the knowledge, practical skills and attributes to contribute to the effective operation of a salon and perform a range of salon and client services. Become a cut above the rest with experience with real clients in a real-world setting, making you highly competitive in the job market.

"To sculpt a head of hair with scissors is an art form. It's in pursuit of art."- Vidal Sassoon

Head Zone

The Nelson Head Zone hairdressing salon aims to mirror the atmosphere of a commercial salon to prepare our students for entering the hairdressing industry.

World of Wearable Art Awards Show

Every year, we take ten students from across the programmes to join us in Wellington at the World of Wearable Art Awards Show.

Students get the chance to work at the event and experience the breadth of opportunities available to skilled stylists.

Competitions

There are plenty of opportunities to allow your creativity to shine throughout the programme with fun competitions and events.
