Teaching Council requirements

You also need to successfully complete the compliance checks below before you can start your studies:

• Literacy assessment
• Numeracy assessment*
• Interview
• Meet the “good character and fitness” criteria stipulated in the Teaching Council Registration and Certification policy
• Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programme Entry Form
• Police Vetting (New Zealand and overseas if applicable)
• Satisfactory references
• Meet the Teaching Council of Aotearoa English language competency requirement
• Meet the safety check requirements as set out in section 31 of the Children’s Act 2014

After you have applied to study at AUT, we will send you a link with more information about these Teaching Council compliance requirements that need to be successfully completed.

This process can take approximately 6 weeks as some of the compliance checks take time.

Useful New Zealand school subjects

All subjects are useful, in particular Mathematics*, Art History, Classical Studies, Drama, Economics, English, Geography, History, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Technologies, Te Reo Māori, Te Reo Rangatira, Visual Arts, Digital Technologies, Health Education and Physical Education

*Primary Teaching applicants will need to demonstrate competence in mathematics equivalent to NCEA Level 2 in a mathematics assessment specified by the Teaching Council. See Mathematics competence (primary ITE programmes). While having NCEA Level 2 Mathematics is not a requirement, it is strongly recommended.
