Develop your skills to influence the management of our cultural heritage

Te Ara Pourewa seeks to increase heritage and museum expertise – particularly Māori – for the protection, preservation and elevation of taonga Māori.

Te Ara Pourewa: Graduate Diploma in Heritage and Museum Studies is a pathway that leads from previous study in Māori Studies, art and design, social sciences and related areas to professional work within heritage organisations, museums, cultural centres and communities, or to more advanced study. Graduates will acquire skills to understand and apply concepts/mātauranga Māori to the heritage and museum sector, and gain a broad and practical knowledge of heritage management and museum practice in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

This will influence the care, protection and management of tangible and intangible cultural heritage including knowledge, treasures and sites of significance while contributing to the future of indigenous Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Online & blended delivery (consisting of face-to-face learning through on-line seminars and on-campus wānanga, on-line content, self-directed activities and industry experience).

Outline

Four compulsory courses:

Rangikura – Traditional Knowledge This ara provides students with the skills to understand concepts/mātauranga Māori and their application to the heritage and museum sector.

Papakura – Heritage Management This ara provides students with an overview of the theory and practice of heritage management as it applies to Aotearoa/New Zealand. They will develop a comprehensive understanding of Māori perspectives relating to the management of structures, sites and landscapes.

Iwikura – Museum Practice This ara provides students with a broad overview of the history, theory and contemporary practice of museums in Aotearoa/New Zealand, with an emphasis on the relationship between Māori and museums.

Internship Students will reflect on, and analyse the experience gained and skills developed from working in a heritage or museum environment. Students will develop skills applicable to the heritage sector with a particular regard to Māori perspectives and practices.
