Summary

Programme Overview

This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language who wish to apply their English language proficiency to a specific context. Graduates will have the general language skills required to participate with increasing independence and fluency in academic, community and/or employment English language contexts. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) low B2. This qualification allows educational institutions to make informed judgements regarding the level at which the graduate can use English for academic purposes.

Programme Scheduling

It comprises 20 contact hours on one of our three timetable strands: 8:30-12:30 / 1:00-5:00pm / 5:30-9:30, Monday to Friday, plus 5 hours of compulsory workshops (face-to-face tutorials with course tutor). Students are also expected to complete 12.5 hours of personal self-study, per week.  


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex oral texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context.
  • Participate with some confidence in sustained spoken discourse on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context.
  • Understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex written texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context.
  • Write clear connected texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context.


Education Pathways

This certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 3) and can lead to:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 4)
  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Employment) (Level 4)
  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4)

This certificate facilitates meeting the language requirements for:

other study or training programmes/courses at New Zealand Qualifications Framework Level 4 or below.


Employment pathways

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:

  • participation in face-to-face interpersonal communication
  • response to basic, context-specific texts
  • production of simple, context-specific record-keeping.

Entry criteria

Entry to ICL’s New Zealand Certificate in English Language L3 course is open to international students who meet the following entry criteria:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • produce evidence of proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) high B1 level. This may be demonstrated via a recognised English language testing system such as IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL or achievement in the New Zealand Certificate of English Language (Level 2) OR via evidence of meeting the other requirements of NZQA's acceptable evidence of English language proficiency
  • possess the appropriate student visa

Where a prospective student for the NZCEL L3 programme cannot produce evidence of current English proficiency, Bridge will use its own internal proficiency test (IEPT) to assess and determine the student’s entry level.
