This work-integrated course is free if you’re working in a food and beverage business for a minimum of 20 hours per week, and you’re not enrolled in any other tertiary programme. This is a great way to upskill and gain a formal qualification while you continue working.
You, your employer and Ara | Te Pūkenga will enter into a training agreement that provides you with an individual training plan and regular feedback as you progress through it.
You’ll receive on-job training and coaching from your employer and our industry training professionals. You’ll also gain knowledge and practical training at our specialist barista labs, in our training restaurants and cafes, and by using our online barista training package. Then, you’ll be able to showcase your excellent service and communication techniques through practical, on-the-job assessment opportunities.

If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study. If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment. If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country. IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance? You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills. This programme has open entry. English language requirements apply.
