Learn to make top notch coffees and develop a whole range of practical hospitality skills in this 16 week course. If you want to become a barista, bartender, maitre d’ or run your own cafe? or bar one day, this course is an excellent way to get your hospitality career underway.
Train in a real bar, gain work experience in our campus cafe and get lots of support and encouragement from your industry-experienced tutors. You can also build your skills further by following this course with The Bartender (Level 4) course.
A TASTE OF WHAT YOU'LL EXPERIENCE
Master the art of making coffee
Learn about the origins of this famous drink and develop your barista skills. We’ll teach you how to grind, brew and serve the perfect coffee, whether it’s an espresso or a chai latte.
Develop legendary customer service skills
Learn how to deliver food, beverage and functions service that’ll keep every guest happy. You’ll get to practice with customers whilst training in our onsite cafe?, in house function rooms bar and barista training areas.
Prepare and set up an in-house function
From buffets to banquets, you will get practical experience setting up rooms for a diverse range of function styles from meetings to catered. Set up a drinks station and practice beverage pouring techniques, learn about table setting and seating plans and hone your service skills using tray and plated service techniques that will get you ready to be a member of a functions and events team.
Build your confidence with cash
Good with money? If not, you soon will be. We’ll teach you all about handling money and transactions at the till, and you’ll get real life experience working as a cashier in our campus cafe.
Get certified in food safety
Grow your knowledge of food preparation - from how to pack and prepare food to the latest food safety practices. This’ll get you up to speed with the latest industry standards, making you invaluable to employers.

Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old
Hold a Level 2 qualification or equivalent or meet the requirements of the NZMA Entry Assessment
If English is your second language, we may get you to sit an English Language Assessment.
If you are an international student, you also need to have an English level of 5.0 IELTS or equivalent with no band score lower than 5.0.
