Become a certified early childhood, primary or secondary teacher. Explore contemporary education trends in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond, guided by current research. Challenge traditional teaching methods to empower all your students' voices.
This programme will develop your critical understanding of research-based pedagogical approaches, learning theory, inquiry skills and content knowledge to ensure you can effectively teach diverse learners in New Zealand schools.
You will also gain valuable practical experience with the professional support of Te Kura Toi Tangata School of Education lecturers and Mentor Teachers. This programme will provide you with a total of 80 days in the classroom, in two different schools.
Papers examine teaching in the New Zealand context, evidence-based inquiry, teaching diverse learners, and curriculum design and implementation. Students complete eleven 500 level postgraduate papers (180 points).
Please Note: The Master of Teaching and Learning is an intensive course aimed at high achievers and requires a higher entry criteria than the Graduate Diploma in Teaching and the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching. This programme requires an additional 30-point paper to be taken after successful completion of all papers also required for the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching.
To be eligible to gain entry into this programme, candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree at level 7 on the NZ Qualifications Framework or a recognised equivalent. The Bachelor's degree must have a B+ average.
Teacher Education applications open from 1 July every year. Please apply early as all applicants are subject to an interview and selection process. Selection of applicants is based on academic background, communication skills, personal qualities, background experiences, and a literacy and numeracy assessment. As well as meeting the selection criteria, you will need to meet the admission requirements for the University.
If you are applying to study the Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary), in addition to the qualification requirements, candidates seeking to enter a secondary programme must have sufficient depth and breadth of a relevant subject or curriculum knowledge from Levels 5 to 7, or higher, in their entry qualification that is relevant for teaching a particular secondary school subject. When you apply for the programme you will need to submit your degree transcript(s). The programme leader/coordinator will discuss and advise the appropriate programme once you reach the interview stage.

Students enrolling into one of our English-medium ITE programmes, specialising in Primary, will need to demonstrate competency in mathematics by achieving a score of at least 690 (generally predictive of success at NCEA Level 2) on the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool (LNAAT). All students must do the LNAAT test even if they already have NCEA Level 2 mathematics.
This requirement is as per the Teaching Council’s mathematics/numeracy requirements. See**:** Mathematics competence (primary ITE programmes) (opens in a new tab). While having NCEA Level 2 is not a requirement, it is strongly recommended.
This testing will be phased in over the next two years and we have outlined below how this will be done:
2025 enrolments - Students will need to pass the LNAAT test prior to graduating.
2026 enrolments - Students in the Bachelor of Teaching in Primary will need to pass the LNAAT test before the end of their first year of study. Students in the postgraduate ITE programmes will need to pass the LNAAT test prior to entry into the programme.
2027 enrolments (and onwards) - Students will need to pass the LNAAT test prior to entry into their ITE programme.
