Summary

Apply a fusion of mathematics, computer science, statistics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to solve real-world problems.

Interpret the rapidly changing world

Data science is a modern discipline in high demand. It expands the capabilities of statistics and computer science to interpret large and complex data sets. With the Master of Data Science, you can develop the skills to adapt to the constant change in data, tools, and statistical techniques.

Your study will consist of advanced coursework, a research project, and a work placement in which to apply your skills.

What you’ll learn

If you choose to study a Master of Data Science, you will:

  • gain an advanced understanding of techniques in data science—including machine learning and statistical methods, and their uses in the world of big data
  • learn to critically analyse data requirements and sources in a variety of areas—from the sciences, humanities, and social sciences to business and government
  • learn about working with data collected by, for, and about Māori. You’ll consider how the Treaty of Waitangi applies—applying Māori sovereignty in data collection, transfer, storage, and publication.
Scholarships for international students

We are currently offering a NZ$10,000 VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship to all eligible international students enrolling in a Master’s degree or Postgraduate Diploma programme. Your scholarship will be processed automatically when your programme application is accepted, and the amount will be deducted from your tuition fees.

How you’ll study

The Master of Data Science has two parts.

Part 1 is made up of 60 [points] of coursework that addresses fundamental techniques of data science, statistical methods, and machine learning.

Part 2 includes 180 points from:

  • core courses covering statistical methods and computational techniques
  • a research preparation course
  • a research project that helps you gain real-world experience working with experts in the Faculty of Science and Engineering
  • a five-week practicum work placement with one of our industry partners, such as a data science consultancy, a government department or agency, or a private company.

You’ll complete a combination of assignments, group work projects, oral presentations, a written research project report, term tests, written examinations, workplace reports, and self-reflections.

Future careers

Data scientists are in high demand in most sectors. The Master of Data Science gives you the knowledge and practical experience you need to graduate ready for a career.

Your skills will be useful both in the public and private sector. You could work in:

  • a data science consultancy
  • most areas of government, such as Stats NZ or the ministries for health, education, or social development
  • private sector companies—for example, in tech, finance, health, insurance, or banking
  • a research institute
