The PGDipLT is a professional language teaching qualification, combining theory with practice and familiarising you with current teaching approaches.

You will become familiar with current approaches in the field of foreign language teaching, and engage with both theory and practice.

You can explore a variety of areas such as materials development, course and syllabus design, task-based language teaching, the structure of language and computer-assisted language learning.

The PGDipLT can provide you with a pathway to the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics.

Entry criteria

You must have completed one of the following at a recognised university (or similar institution):

  • Any degree or professional qualification related to language teaching, and at least two years of second language teaching experience.
  • A Bachelor of Arts in language teaching, linguistics, a language, or a subject related to language teaching.

IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 with no bands less than 6.0; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 and written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 68 and a writing score of 21; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and no bands below 169; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of B-; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85.
