Summary
The fashion industry and creative and cultural sector in Aotearoa New Zealand is looking for people who can apply core technical skills and knowledge of fashion design and construction at an operational level. This programme will introduce you to the bigger picture of the fashion industry and how it operates both locally and globally. The programme will have 'real life' opportunities with projects from the community and fashion industry.
Programme OutlineThe NZ Certificate in Fashion [Level 4] is a project based certificate offering an excellent starting point for a career in the fashion industry or for progressing to further study.
You’ll explore a variety of sustainable textiles and develop foundational fashion design skills, while building entry-level abilities in patternmaking and garment construction.
As a graduate of this qualification you will be able to:
- Apply a variety of introductory skills in fashion.
- Apply creative processes and techniques to solve problems in response to a brief.
- Demonstrate introductory work practices in fashion and explore potential education and employment pathways.

Entry RequirementsEntry RequirementsTo be admitted to this programme, applicants must meet the following admission requirements:
- 40 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits
OR
- NZ Certificate in Arts and Design (Level 3) [Ref 2626]
OR
- a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2
OR
- a recognised equivalent
Selection ProcessLimits on enrolment may be applied due to health and safety reasons and/or availability of resourcing. Should limits be placed on enrolment, the following selection criteria will apply:
Applicants will undergo an interview to establish their interest in in the fashion industry and provide a portfolio of work if available.
Language Requirements
Applicants for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language are required to provide proof of English proficiency.
The required level of proficiency for this programme is IELTS (General) score of 5.5 with no individual band lower than 5 from a single test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
Domestic learners who have completed the majority or all of their education in New Zealand are deemed to have met this requirement.
Assessments
A good level of attendance and a willingness to participate and learn are requirements for successful completion of this programme. You will be assessed on the documentation process in your portfolio and the work you create.
There will be regular assessments of your work with tutor feedback helping you to achieve your goals.
