Summary
In this three-year undergraduate degree programme, you'll gain the educational theory, curriculum knowledge and professional experience needed to become an outstanding teacher. Graduates will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and provisional certification in New Zealand.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and provisional certification in New Zealand.
Choose one of three endorsements, which will prepare you for teaching in a specific setting of the New Zealand education system:
- Early Childhood Education – Dunedin campus only
- Primary Education
- Te Pōkai Mātauranga o te Ao Rua (Primary Bicultural Education) – Invercargill campus only
Applications open on 1 May.
You must apply for and be offered a place in the programme.
We encourage applications before 31 July for the first round of interviewing commencing in August.

Entry criteria
Entry to the Bachelor of TeachingThe Bachelor of Teaching is a specialised bachelor's degree, with its own admission procedure. Beyond meeting general university entry requirements, you'll need to include extra supporting documents with your application, provide written referee reports, meet literacy and mathematics competency requirements, consent to a Children's Act safety check, and attend an interview.

General entry requirementsA university entrance qualification is essential for admission to the University of Otago for all types of programmes. You must also be at least 16 years of age by the first day of classes in your period of study and meet English language requirements.
Domestic studentsYou need to have met the New Zealand University Entrance standard, based on your achievement in secondary school or other prior study. Learn about the different categories for achieving University Entrance and what information you may need to provide with your application.

English language requirementsAll students must be proficient in the use of English. If your first language is not English, there are several ways you may provide evidence of English proficiency, including through prior secondary or tertiary study, internationally recognised English language tests, and foundation language programmes.
The level of English proficiency required for undergraduate study is equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 6.0, with no individual band below 5.5.
