Postgraduate diplomas provide the opportunity for continuing professional development in the same area as an original degree. A postgraduate diploma can often lead to a masters degree.
Geography matters because it is about basic human relationships - between people and the environment, and between people and other people. Ranked among the top geography programmes in the world, the Geography programme at Waikato is the only solely human geography programme in New Zealand.
We offer papers in environmental planning, and geographic information systems as well as in social and cultural geography. A number of the papers have particular emphasis on Maori and feminist perspectives, and the social, economic and political processes that produce them. We'll get you to understand and consider solutions for the world's rapid changes caused by development, tourism, globalisation, environmental degradation, population growth and consumption.
Geography at Waikato goes beyond the classroom and opens you up to numerous career opportunities. Upon graduation, our students pursue careers in urban and regional planning, regional economic development, travel and tourism development, environmental consultancy, as well as the property and housing industry and local government.
You also need to meet an English language entry requirement as follows: IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall (no less than 6.0); iBT (internet based) TOEFL - 90 with a score of 21 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic - 58 with no less than 50 for each communicative skill.; Waikato Pathways - successful completion of Level 8 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in English Language (CAEL) programme.
Note: To provide flexibility to students during COVID-19 who are affected by the closure of testing centres, and who wish to start their studies in 2021, the University of Waikato will accept the following alternative tests until further notice:
The University of Waikato will also accept IELTS and iBT TOEFL test results completed in the last 3 years, rather than the usual 2 years until further notice.
