Summary

Prepare for higher level study in health and science.

This programme is a pathway for the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery and Bachelor of Applied Science (in Human Nutrition or Physical Activity and Health Promotion). It covers a variety of subjects aimed at preparing you for higher level study in health and science, including human and microbial biology, cell biology and chemistry, maths and skills for academic study. All courses within this programme are available in Christchurch, Timaru and online.

Successful completion of this qualification does not guarantee entry to the pathway programme of study.

The Certificate will introduce you to health and science and prepare you for further study by developing your skills for academic study.

STUDY PATHWAYS

As a certificate graduate you can progress your studies at Ara with one of the following programmes: Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Applied Science (in Human Nutrition or Physical Activity and Health Promotion).

Entry criteria

40 credits NCEA Level 2, including 10 Level 1 Literacy credits and 10 Level 1 Mathematic credits (with a strength in Algebra for the Engineering Pathway and Numeracy for other pathways)

Or

New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3)

If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

Alternative requirements

If you show that you have equivalent skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, you may be able to gain alternative entry. Note: The number of courses you have to complete for this qualification may be reduced where you have relevant credits from previous study, or evidence of similar learning or experience in the workplace.

English language requirements (Programme with exceptions to the minimum English Language Proficiency):

IELTS test - Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5

SPEAKING - 5.0
READING - 5.0
WRITING - 5.5
LISTENING - 5.5

TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)

TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)

Cambridge English Qualifications - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill

Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
