Summary

Naturopathic Medicine, or Naturopathy, is based on the belief that the body can heal itself. Naturopaths believe the body has the ability to repair itself and recover from illness if it is supported by a healthy environment. Naturopaths aid and support that healing process by incorporating a variety of alternative health methods based solely on the needs of the individual. These methods and treatments rely exclusively on natural remedies, such as sunlight, fresh air, water, a healthy diet, herbs and nutritional supplementation. Moreover, most naturopaths have extensive training and schooling in natural therapies, like nutrition, hydrotherapy, herbs, plants/flowers and massage, just to name the order to become a qualified naturopath, students must complete at least a 3 year advanced diploma or bachelor degree program and a designated number of hours of supervised clinical practice. Finally, the student can apply for acceptance into one or more of the recognised New Zealand or international naturopathy associations to become entitled to enter professional clinical practice. While becoming a naturopath requires a serious commitment of time and money, students can apply for NZQA funding.

You may want to open a private practice or work along with other professionals in a wellness clinic. Some naturopaths become consultants in health food stores and other retail environments.
