Summary

This qualification is designed for learners who want to begin their training in health and acquire broad-based practical skills and theoretical knowledge including human anatomy and development. This foundational programme is a pathway to the Bachelor of Health Science which could lead to a variety of careers including midwifery and nursing.

This programme is ideal preparation for further studies in health. You will gain important knowledge about health and develop a wide range of academic skills to support your future success in a tertiary environment. Completion of this qualification gives you the opportunity to apply for enrolment into the Bachelor of Health Science, selecting from a range of health pathways including nursing and midwifery.

Human Structure and Function

Human Development

Academic research, literacy and communication skills through enquiry based learning

Health in New Zealand: Exploring individual, group and community health in New Zealand focussing on the impact of social and environmental determinants of health. You will have the opportunity to learn about major health issues in New Zealand along with health promotion and community development theory which aims to address these issues. You will learn about key documents which underpin health care provision, including the Treaty of Waitangi. This paper will challenge you to become more analytical in your thinking and to broaden your perspective on health and wellbeing.

Entry criteria

The Study and Career Preparation for Nursing (Level 4) is open to those who have:

Successfully attended an interview

Completed one of the following: Certificate in Health Studies (Level 3) OR Year 12 and achieved NCEA level 2 or equivalent OR Successfully applied for Special Admission (if over 20 years old)

Additionally for international students: Achieved IELTS level 5.5 (average) with no band lower than 5.0 (or equivalent) if English is an applicant's second language. (Please note it is highly recommended that students find out the specific IELTS requirements of their preferred degree pathway)
