This programme is designed specifically for people who work or have experience in the industry, or have the ability to complete the MNZ training record book and are wishing to obtain the operating license for Skipper Restricted Limits.
You’ll get the maritime knowledge and skills to work as a skipper.
You will learn the skills required to skipper a restricted limit vessel (less than 24 metres in length), safely and with compliance.
Completion of this qualification meets the training requirements of Maritime New Zealand for the issue of an operating license for Skipper Restricted Limits.
Award of this license by Maritime New Zealand will also require the completion of:
Sea service
Maritime NZ medical
Eye test
Fit and proper check
Oral exam
Ancillary certificates.
Career opportunities
The MNZ license Skipper Restricted Limits can be used to gain a position as a Skipper on a restricted limit vessel such as harbour ferries, tugs, water taxis, charter vessels and fishing vessels or crew positions on coastal vessels.
Completion of this qualification meets the training requirements of Maritime New Zealand for the issue of an operating license for Skipper Restricted Limits. Award of this license by Maritime New Zealand will also require the completion of: Sea service, MNZ medical, Eye test, Fit and proper check, Oral exam and ancillary certificates.

New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Operations (Coastal and Offshore) (Level 4)
New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Operations (Level 4) with strands in Fishing and Watchkeeping
New Zealand Certificate Maritime Operations with Strands in Fishing and Watchkeeping (Level 4)
Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license.
General
Applicants are required to complete Year 12 or equivalent of secondary school.
Entry requirements vary from country to country.
IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36.
