A PhD prepares you to become a leading expert in your chosen field. Through rigorous, independent research, you’ll develop specialist knowledge and advanced skills in critical thinking, analysis, and academic communication. PhD graduates are highly sought after for roles in academia, research, policy, and leadership across sectors.

As a PhD candidate, you will:

  • Undertake original research that contributes new knowledge to your discipline
  • Work closely with supervisors who are experts in your field
  • Develop high-level analytical, problem-solving, and writing skills
  • Contribute to global discussions on complex social, political, cultural, or scientific issues
  • Be part of a vibrant research community with access to world-class facilities
PhD Structure

There is no coursework in the PhD programme. Instead, your degree is entirely research-based and culminates in the submission of a thesis. Your thesis must:

  • Demonstrate your ability to conduct independent research
  • Present and justify your research methodology
  • Report findings clearly and critically
  • Make an original contribution to the academic knowledge in your field

Depending on your research area and goals, your thesis can be presented as:

  • A traditional monograph
  • A PhD with Publication, incorporating published or publishable papers
  • A PhD with a Creative Practice Component, integrating creative outputs with scholarly research

For information on the creative practice pathway, download the Requirements for PhD with a Creative Practice Component.
