Learn how to get the best out of an organisation's most valuable asset - its talented employees. Human Resource Management will help you understand how to recruit, develop and motivate employees for the long-term success of a company. This short course can also provide a pathway to further study.

A career in Human Resource Management is all about selecting the right people; then training, developing and motivating staff to improve their individual performance and build a positive team culture.

You'll be involved in all areas of staff recruitment, salaries, employee benefits, training programmes, managerial behaviour and staff productivity.

You’ll also learn about employment relations laws, health and safety, work-life balance, organisational culture, and managing conflict, negotiation and diversity in the workplace.

Students are encouraged to apply HR professional practice to address real situations in the workplace,

Students will take four papers in total (60 points). This includes one introductory paper (15 points) at 100 or 200-level; and three advanced papers (45 points) at 300-level.

You have the option to include one elective paper at 300-level in any subject.

Papers offered differ by location (Hamilton, Online).

Entry criteria

To enrol for the Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management, applicants must have:

  • completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification; OR
  • be able to demonstrate they have adequate training, experience, and ability to proceed with the programme.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may still be considered for special admission, subject to completing some additional qualifying papers.

Admission to each paper is at the discretion of the subject convenor.

You also need to meet an English language entry requirement as follows: IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall (no band less than 6.0); iBT (internet based) TOEFL - 90 with a score of 21 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic - Overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50; University of Waikato College - Successful completion of Level 8 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in English Language (CAEL) programme.
