Summary
Develop your knowledge of assessing the literacy and numeracy demands of learners and programmes of study with the NZ Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Vocational or Workplace) (Level 5).
This qualification is for existing education practitioners who want to develop the literacy and numeracy skills of adult learners by embedding those skills into vocational or workplace programmes.
You will learn to:
- Design embedded literacy and numeracy strategies to enhance learner outcomes in a vocational or workplace programme
- Create and sustain a learner-centred teaching environment that respects learners’ mana and diverse backgrounds, and the wider educational and societal context, in order to facilitate quality learning
- Embed literacy and numeracy teaching and learning in a vocational or workplace programme, with consideration of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique context
- Use assessment and evaluation as tools to enhance student learning and own teaching practice in embedded literacy and numeracy teaching
Course Content
Compulsory Units
- 29623 Design strategies to embed adult literacy and numeracy in the delivery of a training or education programme (10 credits)
- 29625 Use assessment to strengthen adult literacy and numeracy teaching and learning (10 credits)
Elective Set A:
Choose one unit, not already completed in Elective Set B, from:
- 7097 Facilitate learner-led interactive learning sessions for adult learners (12 Credits)
- 29628 Apply Maori and Pasifika frameworks to own adult literacy and numeracy teaching practice (10 credits)
Elective Set B:
Choose one unit, not already completed in Elective Set A, from:
- 29624 Plan and facilitate embedded adult literacy and numeracy skills development in a training or education programme (15 credits)
- 29628 Apply Maori and Pasifika frameworks to own adult literacy and numeracy teaching practice (10 credits)
- 29632 Evaluate own adult literacy and numeracy practice and share with other professionals (10 credits)
Career Opportunities
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge for a role such as:
Vocational, workplace or other specific content educator, with the ability to embed literacy and numeracy within the programme, or undertake further study in adult and tertiary teaching
Satisfactory Completion
To satisfactorily complete the New Zealand Certificate in Adult Numeracy and Literacy Education (Vocational/Workplace) (Level 5) and be awarded this qualification, the student must successfully achieve:
- A minimum of 40 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Adult Numeracy and Literacy Education (Vocational/Workplace) (Level 5)
- The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Adult Numeracy and Literacy Education (Vocational/Workplace) (Level 5) full-time over four months or part-time over two years
Entry criteria
Applicants for this programme of study must have access to a minimum of 6 adult (e.g. over the age of 18) learners over the duration of the programme of study in order to enable them to undertake learning and reflection in an authentic setting.
School Leavers
Applicants should be a minimum of 18 years of age, and have attained NCEA Level 3.
Mature Applicants
Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme.
English Language Requirements
- IELTS test - Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
- TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
- TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
- Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
- OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
- NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 4 (Academic) b) Level 4 (Academic)
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
- Language Cert - B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
- Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than merit in any band
