Get ahead in your career with the skills to work on any working vessel, ferry or fishing boat less than 24 metres in length operating within the coastal and offshore near coastal limits.

You need to complete this qualification before applying to Maritime New Zealand for the issue of a Skipper Coastal and Offshore certificate of competence.

Award of this certificate by Maritime New Zealand will also require the completion of:

Sea service
Maritime NZ medical
Eye test
Fit and proper check
Oral exam
Ancillary certificates.

Career opportunities

Skipper on any working vessel, ferry or fishing vessel less than 24 metres in length operating within the coastal and offshore limits.

You will need to complete the below nine courses (85 credits):
Level 2

723.221 STCW basic safety training Basic First Aid (5 credits)

942.210 STCW basic safety training Basic Sea Survival (5 credits)

Level 4

942.450 STCW basic safety training Basic Fire Fighting (5 credits)

943.439 Coastal Navigation and Passage Position (25 credits)

943.440 Electronic Navigation Aids (10 credits)

943.441 Meteorology – SCO (5 credits)

943.442 General Knowledge – Orals Prep SCO (13 credits)

943.443 MGROC Radio (2 credits)

943.444 Stability SCO (15 credits)

Further training or study

Qualifications recognised internationally under the Standards for Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW):

New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering (Level 4) (MEC 6 and MEC 5)
New Zealand Diploma in Yacht Operations (Level 6)
New Zealand Diploma in Nautical Science (Level 6)

Entry criteria

Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license.

General

Applicants are required to complete Year 12 or equivalent of secondary school.

Entry requirements vary from country to country.

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36.
