Programme highlights

Qualify for an exciting career at sea with the Diploma in Nautical Science.

This programme, when combined with the required seatime and other Maritime New Zealand requirements, will entitle you to apply for the Watchkeeper Deck Certificate of Competency.

It provides the required knowledge, skills and experience for eventual seagoing employment as a watchkeeping officer on board commercial ships.

Further training or study

Diploma in Foreign-going Masters and Chief (Level 7) - this programme with sea time leads to the certificate of competency as Chief Mate, and Master.

Entry criteria

Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license.

General

Applicants are required to complete Year 12 or equivalent of secondary school.

Entry requirements vary from country to country.

IELTS test: Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First, or B2 First for schools, or C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42.
