The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) focuses on how problems can be solved by using design and engineering processes. At every stage of your degree, you'll be involved in creating, designing and realising sophisticated engineering products.
As a Waikato engineering student you will also complete 800 hours of work experience – usually paid – with a company or organisation that suits your interests, and you’ll make valuable industry contacts which in many cases leads to part or full-time work.
Civil Engineering
Civil engineers design and construct the fundamental requirements of society, in key areas such as earthquake proofing, energy recovery, water/waste management, power generation, road networks, transport management, agriculture and forestry development.
As a Civil Engineering graduate from the University of Waikato you will have the practical and theoretical skills to help create, improve and protect our built and natural environments. You will be ready to meet the strong demand for your skills both in New Zealand and around the world.

Civil engineers work in many fields, including structures and infrastructures, dams, bridges, gas and water supply systems, sewerage systems, transportation systems and roads and construction sector. These crucial facilities provide people with a reliable, safe, sustainable and modern environment to live in.
Career opportunities
Years 1 and 4 of the Civil Engineering programme will be available in Tauranga. Years 2 and 3 of the degree need to be completed in Hamilton.
For guaranteed entry you are expected to have studied Calculus at Level 3 NCEA, CIE AS, A Level or equivalent with certain levels of attainment. All other applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and pathways are available.
Students must demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English. The University's English language entry requirements are: IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 overall (no band less than 5.5); iBT (internet based) TOEFL - 80 with a score of 21 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic - Overall score of 50 with no PTE communicative skills below 42; C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English Advanced CAE): Overall score of 169 and no bands below 162; C2 Proficiency (formerly Cambridge Proficiency Exam CPE): Overall score of 169 and no bands below 162; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 80.
