Summary

At Waikato Aviation, we offer the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 6), in either the Flight Instruction Strand or the Airline Preparation Strand. Graduates will meet the eligibility requirements to operate as commercial pilots under New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority.

The Diploma course will enable the student to complete the following:

  • All six private pilot theory exams and obtain a Private Pilot Licence.
  • All six commercial pilot theory exams and obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence.
  • All three instrument rating theory exams and obtain either a Single Engine Instrument Rating, or a Multi Engine Instrument Rating.
  • Complete two Air Transport Pilot Licence theory exams, Human Factors and Meteorology.

Graduates of the Flight Instructor Strand Diploma will not only be qualified Commercial Pilots but also the holder of a Category C Flight Instructor Rating, allowing them to instruct the next generation of pilots. Passing a C-Category Flight Instructor Rating enables you to instruct in both the ground theory and the practical aspects of flying, including teaching students for their flight training towards their Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence.

During this 12 week training, you will complete:

  • An Instructional Techniques Course.
  • Complete a flight instructor ground course and flight preparation for the Category C Flight Instructor Rating Issue Flight Test, and meet all syllabus and eligibility requirements.
  • Complete the practical course and syllabus of flight training for a Category C Flight Instructor Rating, including 25 hours dual flight instruction and spin recovery flight training.
  • Pass a Category C Instructor Rating Issue Flight Test.

You will be taught by our highly experienced senior instructors to gain the skills and knowledge required to become a competent and confident instructor. Becoming a flight instructor is a great way to build knowledge, improve your flying skills and is a fantastic way to gain valuable flying hours after you have completed your diploma.

Entry criteria

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a current CAA NZ Class 1 Medical.
  • Complete the ADAPT pre-screening tool.
  • Provide proof of having obtained NCEA Level 2.
  • Be competent in English to meet the aviation English language proficiency standard.
  • Provide a Waka Kotahi Demerit Points and Suspension History report.
  • Provide a Ministry of Justice Criminal Conviction History report.
  • Complete the enrolment and selection process.

When English is a second language, applicants are required to meet a minimum of Grade 12 with English scores of IELTS 5.5 and TOEFEL (paper based) 550 or (iBT) 80.
