Summary

The purpose of this programme is to provide learners with the knowledge and practical academic skills required to undertake higher-level tertiary study, particularly in the health and wellbeing field.

This programme will produce graduates who are competent and confident in their English language skills and are able to independently and effectively read, write, speak, and listen in academic settings and contexts, in both familiar and less familiar situations.

This programme is open to learners who are building their English language skills in order to progress onto further academic study and those who are eager to gain knowledge and understanding of academic English language at a moderately complex level.

PROGRAMME CONTENT:

The course content consists of a Unit Standard structure, and includes the following assessment criteria:?

  • Write a text under test conditions in English for an academic purpose
  • Write a crafted text for a specified audience using researched material in English for an academic purpose
  • Read and process information in English for academic purposes
  • Deliver an oral presentation in English for an academic purpose
  • Demonstrate understanding of a spoken text and process information in English for an academic purpose
  • Demonstrate understanding of formal spoken texts in an academic context
  • Read and understand moderately complex texts in an academic context
  • Participate in sustained discussions in an academic context
  • Write an evaluation for a specific purpose in an academic context

EDUCATION PATHWAY:

Graduates may progress into the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5)

This programme may facilitate meeting the language requirements for:

  • Many vocational and undergraduate programmes/courses and specialised fields of study requiring lower and/or Level 5 for entrance.

Entry criteria

18 years of age or over at the time of enrolment

Must have a minimum of CEFR of at least LOW B2, or a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) - Level 3 from Skill New Zealand or another New Zealand provider or can demonstrate equivalent evidence of English language proficiency.

Must sit the Skill New Zealand entry placement test prior to enrolment to ensure that the programme of study chosen is appropriate.
