Ready to become a master on a vessel?

Do you hold an Officer of the Watch <500GT near coastal or Mate Fishing Vessel - Limited? Then this is your next step.

Gain the knowledge and skills to be become an effective Master of a vessel (less than 500GT) in the near coastal area or a Master of a fishing vessel in the limited area.

You need to complete this qualification before applying to Maritime New Zealand for:

Master 500GT Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or
Master Fishing Vessel - Limited Certificate of Competency.

Programme structure

You will need to complete the 4 courses below (60 credits):

941.501 Legal and Management (20 credits)

943.544 Navigation Command and Control of Emergencies (20 credits)

943.545 Orals Prep (10 credits)

943.546 Manage Vessel Operation (10 credits)

Career opportunities

Holders of this qualification may gain an MNZ Certificate of Competency (CoC) to work in a command position on commercial work, passenger, charter, or fishing vessels. Responsible for the safe management of the vessel, its passengers and crew and the compliant conduct of the vessel's business.

Entry criteria

Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license.

General

Applicants are required to complete Year 12 or equivalent of secondary school.

Entry requirements vary from country to country.

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36.
