Summary

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree is a one-year, research-only master’s degree. It's a great opportunity to explore a research topic of an applied or professional nature, under the supervision of AUT's expert academic staff.

The Master of Philosophy enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

When you study you’ll get experience working with real people through industry work placements. You’ll also work in our health clinics on campus, which offer services to the public like physiotherapy, oral health, podiatry and more.

What you study

You complete an original thesis during this year of study.

AUT staff are available to supervise MPhil research on a wide range of topics.

Entry criteria

Must have completed one of the following with the equivalent of a B grade average or higher:

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree OR
  • Bachelor’s honours degree OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to the proposed programme of research

An interview may be required for particular research areas.

English Language requirements:

IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; or equivalent; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; AUT Academic English with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
