Summary

Gain the general language skills required to communicate in most familiar situations with increasing independence and fluency.

This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language who wish to increase their English language proficiency for general communication.

This programme aims to provide students with intermediate English language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking which will enable them to cope with most situations in an English-speaking country.

You will learn the skills to:

Participate with some confidence in spoken discourse on reasonably familiar topics
Understand main points and specific details of written and oral texts on reasonably familiar topics
Write connected texts on reasonably familiar topics

Entry criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Be 16 years of age or older on the 1st of January in the year that the student enrols, unless approved otherwise by the Academic Lead: AND

Can reasonably expect to achieve the standards required for successful completion of the programme or course;

AND one of the following

Have successfully completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2); OR

Provide an IELTS Academic score of at least 4.5 with no band score lower than 4.0, or an accepted international equivalence; OR

Provide evidence of CEFR B1 level in the VITAL placement test.

Applicants using VITAL CEFR B1 evidence to enter the programme will be required to undertake the NorthTec internal placement test to confirm their current level of English proficiency. This will include writing and speaking components.
