Our Secondary teaching programme has been developed to nurture and equip graduates to enter schools and kura as authentic, agentic and accountable professionals.

Secondary teaching is not just a set of skills. You teach who you are and use connections to support akonga/students exploring who they are and what they will become. Our unique blend of Christian worldview, matauranga Maori, innovative coursework, and professional experience placements will enable you to be responsive, relational, and transformative as a secondary teacher/kaiako.

BTI’s Teacher Education programmes are approved and accredited by the NZQA and can lead to registration and provisional certification with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Studying the one-year Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) prepares you to teach in diverse secondary schools and kura contexts. This diploma can be completed from anywhere in Aotearoa New Zealand and is undertaken through an innovative combination of onsite intensive weeks, tutorials, independent learning, web-based learning using resources from our online portal and online classes.

Entry criteria

International applicants must meet all of the general entry requirements for the programme they want to study as well as meet the New Zealand qualification verification requirements and English language requirements.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking overall score 7.0; TOEFL Internet-based test (IBT): Listening, Reading score 24, Writing score 27, Speaking score 23 overall score 98. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking overall score 65.
