The New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Groom) (Level 4) is intended to provide the equine industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to manage the care and exercise of horses in training for the sporthorse sector of the equine industry.

This programme is targeted at people who have experience in horse management in the sporthorse sector of the equine industry and who wish to further develop their skills.

Graduates will benefit by having a qualification that provides recognition of their skills and a pathway to further qualifications or training in the equine racing or sporthorse industry.

The industry will benefit from this qualification by having qualified senior staff who are able to contribute effectively and professionally in the workplace.

Graduates will be capable of working under minimum supervision with responsibility for work outcomes and will be able to contribute effectively and professionally in the workplace.

Graduate Profile

A graduate of the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Groom) (Level 4) will be able to;

  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and performance venue personnel.
  • Manage the day-to-day care requirements of horses in training.
  • Manage problems of performance horses and emergencies involving horses.
  • Implement, monitor, and review horses’ training plans for a specific equestrian discipline.
  • Manage the preparation and requirements of horses before, during and after an event, and attend to the rider’s requirements.

Education Pathways

Learners may pathway to further study to achieve the following qualifications:

New Zealand Certificate in Equine Coaching (level 4), New Zealand Certificate in Equine Racing (level 4), New Zealand Diploma in Equine Management (level 5)

Employment Pathway

Graduates of this qualification may be employed as senior sporthorse grooms. With further work experience and study, graduates may gain employment as a stable foreman.

Entry criteria

Students must have a background or interest in Equine in their own country and will be required to provide a CV outlining this.

International students for whom English is a second language must attain an IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or any other acceptable evidence of English language proficiency requirements as listed under Rule 18.
