Want to study for a diploma or bachelor but your English needs further improvement to be successful?

Study English and get the skills to succeed in further study and in your career.

You will learn the language skills and knowledge you need to participate in further academic study, including five unit standards to gain credits toward meeting UE Literacy requirements.

You will also develop the interpersonal and intercultural skills required to study, work and live in the multicultural environment of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Programme structure

You will need to complete the below four courses (60 credits):

843.413 Academic reading and writing skills (15 credits)

843.414 Applied academic reading and writing (15 credits)

844.419 Notetaking and presentations (15 credits)

844.420 Academic discussions (15 credits)

Career opportunities

Graduates of this certificate will have the English language skills to work in positions that require an understanding of moderately complex texts, who has skills to do oral presentations and participate in groups discussions.

Further training or study

This certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) (Applied) and can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5).

Entry criteria

Applicants must meet the following entry criteria:

Have New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3)

Or

IELTS test: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36

Or

A level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) low B2.

Or

Achieve a score in the range of 75-79 in the online diagnostic test.
