Summary

The University of Waikato, located in the central North Island cities of Hamilton and Tauranga, is an internationally recognised tertiary institution offering degree programmes designed to produce job-ready graduates. Each year, the University provides more than 2,000 industry placements and internship opportunities, believing its students benefit from the chance to put the theory they have learnt in classrooms, into practice in a real-world employment environment.

With a diverse student population - we have students representing more than 85 different nationalities - the University offers a welcoming and vibrant garden campus environment where students are encouraged to study and play.  This diversity spills into our classrooms, adding an extra dimension to learning through working with people of different cultures and backgrounds.

Academic staff at Waikato are passionate about their areas of expertise and are committed to helping their students build the skills and knowledge required to be successful in their careers. Inside and out of the classroom, you will be encouraged to engage with your lecturers, to ask questions and generate debate.

Beyond academic life, the University has an enthusiastic and energetic international student support team who are dedicated to helping international students with life outside the classroom including medical insurance, visa renewals as well as organising social events to connect you with other students and the wider community.

For high achieving international students, the University offers an International Excellence Scholarship, up to NZ$10,000.  For more information click here.

The University offers two study locations to choose from. The main campus is located in Hamilton City, a vibrant and multicultural city with a campus that stretches across 64 hectares of park like grounds . As the University of Waikato continues to grow, it has expanded its teaching and research activity to the Bay of Plenty region, by opening a new campus in Tauranga's CBD in February 2019.

More about Hamilton Campus

Our motto, Ko Te Tangata - For the people, is the essence of everything we do - that's why you are made to feel home at the University of Waikato.

When surveyed, our students said Waikato had one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, and 92% of our students were satisfied with their experience at Waikato (International Student Barometer Survey 2019).

Our first-class facilities are all located on campus, building a strong sense of community. You'll find Waikato has a laid-back and easy-going atmosphere that welcomes and is inclusive of new students. We provide an extensive orientation programme for all students beginning with a traditional Māori welcome at our campus marae (meeting house).

As a new student, we encourage you to participate in our International Buddy Programme which will pair you with a student mentor of similar interests. Having someone you know you can go to with any question makes your transition to life at Waikato and in New Zealand much easier.

It's a great place to study and we invite you to join us and experience it for yourself.
