Summary

Programme Overview

This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language, who wish to pursue further English language study in an academic context. Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mid B2 (i.e IELTS 6.0). This qualification allows educational institutions to make informed judgements regarding the level at which the graduate can use English for academic purposes

16 weeks

Programme Scheduling

There are two parts, Part A and Part B. Part A is textbook-based. Students complete 8 units that have been designed by ICL.

Part B is topic-based.

20 hours per week on one of our three timetable strands: 8:30-12:30 / 1:00-5:00 pm / 5:30-9:30, Monday to Friday (20 hours), plus up to 5 hours of optional workshops (by arrangement with the course tutor).

Students are also expected to complete 17.5 hours of personal self-study, per week

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4)
New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 4)
New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Employment). (Level 4)

NZCEL (L5) can lead to:

programmes/courses that are linguistically demanding and/or a specialised field of study most postgraduate programmes/courses, depending on the focus of the programme leading to this qualification.

Entry criteria

International students must meet the following requirements

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Produce evidence of proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2 Intermediate level. This may be demonstrated via a recognised English language testing system such as IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL, achievement in the New Zealand Certificate of English Language (level 4) or by achieving an appropriate score on ICL’s placement test.
    Possess the appropriate student visa

A prospective student for the NZCEL (Level 5) programme cannot produce evidence of current English proficiency. ICL will use their own placement test to assess and determine the student’s entry-level.
