Become a research-informed leader who drives real change in health practice, education, services and policy with the Doctor of Health Science.
The Doctor of Health Science is for experienced health professionals who want to explore the questions that matter most in their practice. You’ll contribute original knowledge in your field and lead sustained, evidence informed change in health practice, education, services and policy – with a commitment to advancing health equity and honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the confidence to communicate your work across academic and professional audiences.
This degree combines taught courses with a research thesis grounded in your own professional context, focused on a genuine area of need or possibility. Your research is designed to create practical impact, with findings shaped for real-world dissemination and uptake – so your work reaches the people and systems that need it most.
Entry criteria
Minimum entry requirementsMust have completed the following in a specialisation appropriate to the proposed research:
- Master’s degree OR
- Bachelor’s degree with honours (equivalent to 4 years of study, with the last year at postgraduate level)
The degree must have a standard equivalent to first class or second class (first division) honours.
The degree should include advanced learning in research, execution of a research project and a written report on the research.
AND
Must have a minimum of five years’ professional experience in the specific area of study
What you need to start a PhD or other doctorate at AUT
English language requirements- IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with 7.0 in Writing and no band less than 6.0
Acceptance is subject to the availability of staff for supervision, prior research preparation and appropriate facilities. Meeting academic entry requirements does not guarantee admission to the programme.
