Summary

The Postgraduate Diploma in the Practice of Psychology is designed to meet the requirements for registration as a psychologist under the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance (HPCA) Act.

As a PGDipPracPsych (ABA) student, you will develop practical skills in applying behavioural principles, including conducting functional analyses and implementing behaviour-change programmes. Training focuses on designing assessments, collecting and interpreting data, and adapting interventions in response to emerging needs.

You will also build competency in meeting legal, ethical, cultural (including bicultural practice aligned with Te Tiriti o Waitangi), and professional requirements in accordance with New Zealand Psychologists Board guidelines.

Overall, graduates leave the programme with the knowledge, skills, and professional awareness needed to apply positive behavioural approaches in clinical and applied settings.

Entry criteria

Selection for the Postgraduate Diploma in the Practice of Psychology is based on both academic achievement and suitability for professional practice as a psychologist.

Please note that places are limited, and all applications are considered on a competitive basis by the Selection Committee. Applications are reviewed after the closing date, and applicants will be advised whether they have progressed to the interview stage by late September. Interviews take place in October, with outcomes communicated shortly afterwards.

You can apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in the Practice of Psychology (Applied Behaviour Analysis) if you have:

  1. Completed or are completing a master’s thesis of at least 90 points; AND
  2. Completed all core 500-level Behaviour Analysis papers with at least a B+ average.

As part of the selection process, applicants are required to meet additional programme requirements. Full details are available on our Applying for a Behaviour Analysis Programme page.
