Summary

This programme will prepare you for higher tertiary study or training in New Zealand. You will enhance your oral and written English language skills to understand and use more complex language in academic contexts and for most situations in wider life.

This programme is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mid B2.

Career/Further Opportunities

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:

  • Interpersonal communication
  • Understanding of context-specific texts of a more academic nature
  • Writing records and reports
  • Interaction in a team

This certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) and can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5).

This certificate may facilitate meeting the language requirements for many vocational and undergraduate programmes/courses and specialised fields of study requiring lower and/or New Zealand Qualifications Framework Level 5, for entrance, depending on the focus of the programme leading to this qualification.

Entry criteria

  • Candidates must be 16 years or older.
  • Candidates must have achieved NZCEL (Applied) (Level 3) or
  • Have achieved a score of IELTS 5.5 across all bands, or equivalent.
  • Candidates must take part in a selection interview and will be required to take a placement test to determine their current English Language level and learning goals.

Placement in this programme will be determined by the Centre for Languages Placement Test according to language proficiency.
